Shaping the Future of Thai Manufacturing: Lessons from Japan’s Smart Factory Insights

Press Release

Dec 3, 2024

Bangkok, Thailand— As Thailand accelerates its journey toward Industry 4.0, valuable lessons can be drawn from Japan’s manufacturing sector, one of the world’s most advanced. A recent survey on “Smart Factory Initiatives at Japan Companies” conducted by ABeam Consulting Japan among over 6,000 manufacturing professionals reveals critical insights into the success factors and challenges of smart factory initiatives. These findings offer actionable strategies for Thai manufacturers striving to lead the ASEAN region in industrial innovation.

The survey found that fewer than 40% of Japanese companies have implemented smart factory initiatives, even as the global push toward Industry 4.0 intensifies. Larger organizations (≥ 1 trillion yen in corporate size) also show limited adoption, with over 60% yet to begin. These numbers highlight the significant challenges ahead but also underscore opportunities for markets like Thailand to learn and adapt.

Key Findings from the Survey:

  1. Smart Factory Adoption is Low: Only 38.6% of large Japanese companies actively pursue smart factory initiatives, signaling room for growth and innovation.
  2. Automation as a Key Goal: Half of the surveyed companies aim for "full automation," while others prioritize linking supply chain data or preserving craftsmanship skills, reflecting diverse industrial needs.
  3. Polarized Success Rate: While more than 50% of Japanese companies report progress, over 40% struggle, showing a clear divide between leaders and laggards in smart factory implementation.
  4. Challenges Beyond Resources: A lack of skilled personnel and funding remains a hurdle, but reliance on extending existing operations rather than rethinking processes limits productivity improvements.
  5. Leadership Drives Success: Companies with active management involvement boast an 83.3% success rate, reinforcing the critical role of leadership in driving transformation.

These findings can provide critical lessons for the Thai manufacturing sector. For Thailand to establish itself as a regional hub for smart factories, executive leaders must take a proactive approach to overcoming barriers and adopting best practices.

One resounding insight is the importance of leadership. Companies where senior management actively commits to smart factory initiatives demonstrate significantly higher success rates. However, success demands more than just commitment—it requires a clear vision, adequate resources, and cross-departmental collaboration.

"Japan’s experience reveals that success in smart factories is not just about technology—it’s about vision, leadership, and execution," said Shinto Goto, Director and Head of Sales and Logistics at ABeam Consulting Thailand. "Thai manufacturers have an incredible opportunity to learn from these insights and take bold steps to secure their place in the global manufacturing landscape. Success in smart factories demands more than adopting new technologies—it requires visionary leadership, thoughtful investment, and a readiness to transform operations at their core."

Thai manufacturers' path to success lies in clarifying their vision for smart factories, breaking away from traditional processes, and fostering a culture of innovation. With proactive leadership, Thailand has the potential to become a model for smart manufacturing in Southeast Asia.
