Threats and Opportunities from E-Mobility for Auto Parts Manufacturers in Southeast Asia

A limited supply of electric vehicles is currently the biggest bottleneck hampering electric vehicle adoption in Southeast Asia. Despite new incentives introduced by some governments in 2022, the market share of plug-in electric vehicles in Southeast Asia remains at about 1%. However, we expect that the supply bottleneck will ease in the coming quarters, allowing the sales of electric vehicles to grow exponentially.

The growing popularity of electric vehicles in Southeast Asia, most of which are currently imported, will have ramifications for auto parts manufacturers, and in particular internal combustion engine (ICE) parts manufacturers. ICE parts manufacturers in Southeast Asia represent a multi-billion-dollar industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people. They need to understand how the e-mobility trend will affect them, and how they should transform to future-proof their businesses and support the development of the local electric vehicle ecosystem.
