Strengthening Thailand’s Automotive After-Sales Service Industry for a Sustainable Future

Press Release

Jan 6, 2025

(Bangkok, Thailand) – Thailand’s automotive after-sales service industry is facing crucial changes. With the growing number of vehicles on the road, the demand for reliable and efficient maintenance is increasing. However, this expansion is accompanied by several challenges, including a shortage of skilled labor, increasing demands for technological advancements, and the need for improved environmental practices. These challenges, as also evidenced in other markets, including Japan, all call for industry reforms.

One of the most pressing issues facing the industry is a growing shortage of skilled technicians. While the demand for automotive services continues to rise, the workforce available to meet that demand is not keeping pace. This shortage is especially pronounced as new technologies, such as electric vehicles (EVs), become more common. The need for technicians who are not only skilled in traditional maintenance but also in the servicing of these new technologies is becoming critical. Without sufficient training programs and infrastructure to support the development of these skills, the industry could face delays and service inefficiencies, which in turn could impact customer satisfaction.

For example, in Japan, last year’s questionnaire showed that the percentage of high school students in the Department of Automobile Maintenance aspiring to work as auto mechanics peaked at 61% in the first year of high school but declined over time to just 31% in the third year. In recent years, the ratio of job openings for auto mechanics in Japan has been much higher than the average for all occupations, and securing applicants for auto mechanics has become an issue.

In addition to the labor gap, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards remains a key concern. As the automotive landscape evolves, so too must the regulations that govern vehicle maintenance. In Thailand, as more vehicles hit the road, the risks associated with unsafe practices—whether from faulty inspections or improper handling of maintenance materials—become more significant. At the same time, environmental sustainability is gaining traction as a national priority. The automotive sector must address pollution concerns, especially in urban areas, by adopting greener practices across maintenance operations, such as using eco-friendly materials and improving waste management.

However, these challenges also present significant opportunities for transformation. Thailand’s growing commitment to sustainability aligns with the global push for environmentally responsible practices. By embracing sustainable maintenance methods, from energy-efficient workshops to the recycling of materials, Thailand’s after-sales service industry can position itself as a leader in eco-conscious automotive care. Similarly, as the shift toward electric vehicles accelerates, there is an urgent need for the industry to adapt. This transition presents an opportunity for automotive service providers to invest in specialized training, new diagnostic equipment, and EV-specific parts—ensuring that they are equipped to meet the needs of the next generation of vehicles.

The customer experience is another area where the industry can innovate. With more car purchases shifting to digital platforms, after-sales service centers will need to elevate their in-person interactions and ensure top-tier service standards. Service quality, once a differentiator, will become essential in retaining customers who are increasingly looking for convenience, efficiency, and reliability. By integrating cutting-edge technologies, improving technician expertise, and maintaining a strong customer service ethos, Thailand’s automotive after-sales service industry can ensure that it remains a cornerstone of the country’s automotive sector.

To remain competitive, Thailand’s automotive after-sales service sector must adapt to these evolving demands. By addressing the workforce shortage, embracing sustainability, and preparing for the future of electric vehicles, the industry can not only overcome current challenges but also thrive in the long term. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to quality, Thailand’s after-sales service industry has the potential to lead in Southeast Asia and beyond.
