Success Factors

  • Agreeing a HR strategy and a human capital management story that involves and has the consensus of HR, management and business departments
  • Deploying the above in the form of a HR portfolio that involves business departments, based on the HR strategy
  • Securing external credit for the human capital part of the integrated report

Client Challenges

Getting understanding and buy-in for the motivation behind human capital investment with the involvement of internal stakeholders

To realize human capital management, it is essential for companies to have commitment from internal stakeholders to treat the matter as a management issue, rather than just a HR department activity. Given this, Resonac Holdings Corporation was also faced with a plethora of immediate challenges in the wake of their management integration, such as unifying HR operations processes and systems. For that reason, identifying HR materialities that required selection and focus, and committing to activities and actions that would create a story to carry out and get buy-in beyond the bounds of HR were key factors in successfully addressing these challenges.
To address this, the company selected ABeam Consulting as its partner for its specialist team focused on human capital management, as well as its first-party framework for accelerating coordination with business, and set to work on formulating a human capital management story and HR strategy that would contribute to its business.

Key Project Success Factors

Activating stakeholders who hold the keys to identifying the HR materialities that need to be solved now, and to solving those challenges

Identifying HR materialities using a human capital management storyboard
Activating internal stakeholders and getting their buy-in for generating value gained through human capital investment is key, so we sought to create a story that would let HR take the lead and communicate frictionlessly, using the “human capital management storyboard” put forward by ABeam Consulting.

Involving key internal stakeholders
ABeam Consulting played a leading role in facilitating discussions and deepening mutual understanding within the project secretariat and among HR stakeholders, creating HR-led provisional solutions. ABeam also dug deeper into the story and advanced discussions to improve the projects chances with high-priority business departments on the basis of the provisional solutions, centered around the “human capital management storyboard,” in recognition of the fact that advancing human capital management within HR alone would be impractical. Thanks to this cross-departmental communication, ABeam got buy-in for the “motivation to do” human capital investment, as well as commitments to execute on the project with the involvement of business departments. This made it possible to move forward with the HR initiative as something the whole company took ownership of.
It is not uncommon to see cases where a failure to secure motivation around these initiatives becomes a barrier to the execution of the HR strategy and to problem solving for the business. Amidst this context, making effective use of the “human capital management storyboard” as a communication tool that can serve as a shared language, not limited to the HR department, was a key success factor for smoothly involving all stakeholders.

ABeam’s Contribution

Investigating and drafting initial proposals for framework presentation and internal and external stories

ABeam Consulting took on the tasks of presenting the “human capital management storyboard” framework, drafting a human capital management story that takes into account purpose, vision and business strategy, and creating materials to facilitate internal communication. The “human capital management storyboard” is defined by the fact that it brings into relief universal HR strategies and measures that can tend to be somewhat ambiguous, thus helping to identify variable challenges and clarify where human capital investment should go, by delineating and organizing human capital challenges in terms of personnel challenges and business strategy aspects from a business feasibility (continuity) perspective, in order to identify HR materialities. ABeam also created template materials for external parties such as the integrated report centered around the “human capital management storyboard,” contributing to the company gaining a more positive external evaluation.
Going forward, to make the advance of human capital management more robust, ABeam is also set to support the planning and execution of the suite of specific measures put forward to address the company’s HR materialities.

Resonac’s human capital management model
A HR strategy roadmap organized around HR materialities

I am grateful to everyone at ABeam Consulting in particular for their tremendous contributions at the stage where we were creating our human capital management story, and clarifying how this would connect to our various measures (modeling). I believe that the organization of the human capital management story was effective also in defining specific goals and challenges such as establishing our HR materialities and the KGIs and KPIs we would apply to those materialities.
In going further with our human capital management and its associated disclosures, we will be relying on ABeam’s support to contribute to raising our corporate value.
