In Japan, many globally recognized intellectual properties (IP), including rights to characters and games, have been created under unique business models such as the production committee system. We consider that the ability to generate original and high-quality IP across diverse genres including manga, anime, films, games, and characters is supported by Japan’s industrial structure to date and its accumulated know-how in nurturing creators.
On the other hand, intensifying global competition, diversification of customer touchpoints, and advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have increased the difficulty of converting hit works into sustained business value. Through its client engagements, ABeam Consulting recognizes that although IP originating in Japan has high potential, its value is not being sufficiently monetized due to dispersed rights, insufficient use of data, and the absence of a management function responsible for overall optimization.
In this insight, we outline the structural challenges of Japan’s IP industry and present a direction for management aimed at maximizing IP value.
